Free Avatar
There are a lot of sites where you can get a free avatar. Most of these sites give away two dimensional avatars. They are basically a picture and often a cartoon like character picture. If you have your own picture, you basically have a 2d avatar. Some companies are giving out free 3d avatars as well. However, when you look around on the net, the free avatars are not that great looking. They can be used to interact online and are better than nothing, but to get a great avatar you must buy it or create it yourself.
